Hey, if PSU's men's hoops team suited up and played a game against PSU's football players or the Intramural Champs, their Sagarin would go down...beuase they'd probably lose!

Under the heading "The Insanity Continues". Now if you think that heading was used to paint these pre-season polls in a favorable light, then I really feel bad for you. Every single shot taken against PSU's OCC schedule makes use of his numbers, so someone must certainly put a lot of stock in these polls.
I'm glad you're on record on Saragin though, so when the season ends and his simulation has the Big East dead last among major conferences, we'll see if your opinion has changed.

Again. I have faith in Sargarin's rankings as the season wears on, and of course in his final poll. But no one's pre-season poll excite me.

My entire point, and why I think the Harris Poll will set the standard, unless you're Titan, who still is buying White Star Line stock, like the rest of idiots in the world.
My point with all this pre-season crap is this: a significant portion of the BCS formula depends on these polls. Where a team starts will have a tremendous effect on where that team finishes, meaning whether that team plays for a MNC.
A few examples of past (and present). Last year, very few people (myself included) would have stated that either PSU or WVU would have the seasons they had. The AP and Coaches polls reflected that also at the beginning of the season. Both teams had great seasons and only lost one game, yet still, if USC had lost to Notre Dame it is unlikely that either would have gotten into the title game. Both teams were unranked and had too far to climb. No voter in either poll gave either team any amount of credit at the beginning of the season. Yet these "experts" felt that Purdue would win the Big Ten title, and gave them a high ranking. Anyone else remember Nebraska in 2002, or countless other examples?
Another example: let's suppose that Pitt opens the season 5-0 with solid wins over Virginia and Michigan State, both solid OCC opponents. What do you really think that they will be ranked in the AP and Coaches poll after that? I would say perhaps in the region of 18-25. Is that fair, just, or correct? Suppose that Pitt completely dominates them, goes on to beat WVU and Louisville. Do you honestly think, given where Pitt starts out at in any of these pre-season polls, that they would ever make it to the national title game???
Pitt would have a far better chance at competing for a MNC (as would PSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, etc..) in a system that mirrors the Harris poll, meaning one that evaluates the first 5 (or so) weeks of the season, rather than what Beano Cook, Tom Lemming, and the rest of the "gang" feels one month prior to the season.
Two things college football needs: a playoff, and the abolition of pre-season polls that count for anything. Name one other sport that uses pre-season polls in deciding the "title" game.
