Time to reflect - MLB allstar break

Post by Eaglealum »

How many realize how astounding what guys like Babe Ruth did. They played 148 games not 162. Every field they played on was over 450' to centerfield and 430-460 to the alleys in Rc and LC . So basically, Ruth didn't just hit over 600 homers he hit 600+ balls that would've been lead story on espn because they were 500+ ft bombs . To put that into perspective, since PNC opened, there have been 3 balls hit over 460' by 1920-30's dimensions , that's 3 hr in 15 years. They don't make cars, appliances, or ball players like they used to. On a side note, the Bucs old time bomb launcher, Ralph Kiner, was kinda looked at like McGwire or Bonds (with an asterisk) because they moved the fence in left field at Forbes infrom 436 to 386 to make room for both bullpens. His hr went from 21 to 51 the next year.

Ruth also did not have hit against pitchers that were specialized like today. pitchers used to pitch complete games and throw how many pitches a game. baseball has changed and its a different game. hard to compare the game now and then. he did not have to hit against pitchers throwing high 90's every day like now. not taking anything away from Ruth and other players from that era just saying its a different game.100 pitches and they r looking to take a guy out now.not to mention the dh. as bob walk says BAN THE DH.

Another impressive thing, the mounds were taller back then. Having a pitcher throw down at you had to have been terrifying.

A baseball mound is supposed to be 10.5 inches above home plate, before it could be anywhere from 15-20. Insane.

That may be true yankee hater, but how many balls in the home run derby go over 460? not very many, and I promise what Ted Williams,Babe Ruth and those guys faced was a little better than someones high school coach or Robbie Canos' dad. Just my opinion, but I'd bet less than 50% of todays mlb players would last more than a year in the show in 1930.

It's not like the stadiums back then were 500 feet the whole way around. Most stadiums were extremely deep in center and the gaps, bit ridiculously short down the lines. According to the link below, Yankee Stadium was 295 down the right field line in 1923. Babe Ruth probably could have urinated over that fence after one of his all-nighters. IMO Babe Ruth would never make the big leagues in today's game.

Eaglealum you are correct that most mlb players today would not last more than a year back in the30's. that is due to expansion from 16 I believe to 30 teams today. that's why I have to watch players like barrajas barmes tabata snider for examples who would never have made it back then.no more 4 man rotations either. just saying that baseball is different game now.everything is so specialized right now that is how u explain lefty relievers. as far as how far they hit the ball does it really matter ? a home run is a home run they are just playing by todays rules. again ruth and others from era were great players and deserve 2 b in the HOF but its a different game now.enjoy it

I beg to differ... Back then it was all white guys just like the NFL and NBA. Just saying.

They also used different mechanics back then which is why some could hit with immense power. Now everybody wants to do it and whiff 190 times a year.

Tris Speaker struck out 220 times in 20 big league seasons. ... Btw how do mechanics allow 100 more ft onto home runs? They also didn't have flaxseed oil, hgh, or trainers
