The Favorite – Berlin – Berlin is the defending champion, and they are well equipped to win District Five again. The Mountaineers have the benefit of a first round bye to rest up and get healthy. Berlin also possess the most dynamic player in the field with Braden Fochtman. The young sophomore has already racked up 1,801 yards and 22 rushing touchdowns. He is as good back, and is excellent in reading holes and making cuts. Fochtman is a handful himself, but Berlin packs an experienced team all around the field.

The Challenger – Meyersdale – The Red Raiders come in with two losses, including a week ten loss to a very good Tussey Mountain team. Still, if anyone can knock off Berlin, its Meyersdale, because they have already done it. Meyersdale is paced by a very good senior back in Gavin Berkley. Cole Clark is a dynamic player that makes his presence felt in a variety of ways, including a number of big special teams plays. Meyersdale regularly puts points on the scoreboard, and they have the weapons and the groundwork to knock off Berlin. The kicked about a potential Meyersdale-Berlin rematch is that it would happen in the semifinals, and not the championship.

Most Intriguing Game - Windber at Meyersdale – The two teams met way back in week two with Meyersdale taking the game 36-28. The two teams will meet again on the same field with much more on the line. Meyersdale obviously has a talented group that can put points on the board, but so does Windber. The Ramblers have had an up and down season, but there is no doubt that they have talent. They have weapons galore, and they were thought to be a favorite at the state of the season, and they hung with Meyersdale the first time around, in fact, the Ramblers led 21-6 at halftime before a big Meyersdale second half.

Least Intriguing Game – Shade at Northern Bedford – Shade is not a bad team, but they are 0-5 against teams that are in the postseason. They will be dealing with a long road trip to Loysburg to take on a very good Northern Bedford team fresh off a win over AAA Punxsutawney. It could be a close game, but NBC will pull away in the end.

Lights Out Levi – Levi Albright is a very good football player for the North Star Cougars, and perhaps the best defensive player in the field. He is the heart and soul of this team, and will be the main reason why the Cougars could make a run in the playoffs. He leads the team with 99 tackles, and also serves as a solid short yardage back. Some advice, if #59 is running at you, watch out. He can turn the lights out.

Super Sophomore – Braden Fochtman is a special talent for Berlin, and only big things are to come for this young man. He employs a unique running style where he waits for a hole to develop and glides until he finds one. Fochtman is very elusive, and quick on his feet. He has two games where he eclipsed 300 yards, and two more where he went over 200. Needless to say, he can frustrate the best of defenses. Before the end of his sophomore season, Fochtman has 2,305 career rushing yards.

Over the Hills and Far Away – (Led Zeppelin, anyone?) That is about where Blake Over can throw a football. Northern Bedford has the most impressive passing game of anyone in the bracket. It starts with senior quarterback, Blake Over. He has thrown for 2,360 yards this season along with 27 touchdowns. The QB makes up half of this connection, but he has two pretty good receivers to aid him. Kyler Diehl is a 6-5 match up nightmare, and is so difficult to defend. He has caught 53 balls this season with 10 of them going for scores. Jacob Dasher is a FRESHMAN, with 60 catches on the year. It is pick your poison when defending the Panthers.

Twice as Nice – Windber really has an unbelievable stable of skilled players, but the key to it are the Tomlinson twins. Devon made the move to quarterback this season, and has thrown for over 1,000 yards on the year. He is still a dynamic runner when he gets the chance. Dan Tomlinson leads the Ramblers in all purpose yardage, as he is a factor in the passing and rushing games, as well as a dangerous return man. Throw in senior wideout, Matt Barkley, and the Ramblers are a pretty fast team.

Two Grand Tussey – The Tussey Mountain Titans have two 1,000 yard rushers on the season, so that is a pretty good way to describe what they like to do. Darrin Sipes (1270) and Daniel Taylor (1025) have combined for 29 of the team’s 41 rushing touchdowns. This offense is not all about the run, though, as Quinn Barnett has thrown for over 1,000 yards. Tussey has lost two games by a combined 10 points, this is a very good football team.

Run Raiders Run – Meyersdale averages 200 yards a game on the ground, but how they do it is pretty special. It is no secret that Gavin Berkley is the main man, as he leads the team with over 100 yards a contest, but they have four other players that average at least 15 yards a game. In that, Meyersdale can rely on one guy, but they still feel comfortable in giving the ball to guys like Cole Clark and Jason Ritchey.

Out of the Darkness – After a long hiatus from the playoffs, the Shade Panthers are in the postseason for the second consecutive season. Shade has a dangerous team, and they played Meyersdale very tough. Nash Walker missed some time with an injury, but he has been playing well of late, and is a good athlete at quarterback.
