Famous Alumni
Re: Famous Alumni
I believe Galen Hall went to Williamsburg. Former HC at Florida, OC at PSU, coached in the XFL I believe. I'm not sure about all those facts but I think I'm close. Other people might be able to clarify.

Re: Famous Alumni
Technically Kevin Givens plays his best sport in District 7, so I never mention him with D6.
Re: Famous Alumni
Yes, Galen Hall did attend Williamsburg and I believe they won a few state titles while he was there. That's all I know. He's my grandmother's cousin so I can get more information later if I were to give her a call.
Re: Famous Alumni
Isn't there a dude from Hollidaysburg that coached the New Orleans Hornets and had some NBA front office jobs?

That would be Jeff Bower, SC.

Re: Famous Alumni
Here's one from Bedford Co. Royce Waltman, he graduated from Hyndman and coached basketball at Bedford. He was an assistant under Bob Knight at Indiana, was his assistant on the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal Team. Head coach at Div. I, II, and III levels. He may not be on the level of some of the other people mentioned, but think he has done well for himself.
Re: Famous Alumni
Another one that may not be quite as exciting but still is very impressive. Charlie Cragen, from Everett, competed in what was the Craftsman Truck Series in NASCAR. He also had a ton of success in the Winston North Series. I believe he is the most decorated local stock car racer.

I don’t know that I would give Charlie Cragan the title for best driver around here. Gerald Chamberlain of Everett and Tom Peck of McConnellsburg would also have to be included. Gerald was inducted into the inaugural class of the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame. He and his mechanic, Gus Frear of Bedford, dominated dirt track racing in the early 70’s at major tracks in the Northeast. He had 31 victories at Reading in 1972 and was second in the United States for number of victories that year. Only Dick Trickle had more. Gus is an absolute wizard with Ford engines. They also briefly raced in NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup series. All three are in the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame.
Tom Peck raced in the NASCAR Busch Grand National series. He was in 171 races, finishing in the top 10 52 times and finished as high as 5th in points.
I was fortunate that as a youngster my dad would take me to the Bedford Speedway where I got to see all 3 of them race. Racing in these parts is still very competitive but nothing like it was in the 60’s and 70’s.

Re: Famous Alumni
I threw Fred Waring out there, I didn't mention Chuck Knox. Ground Chuck started as an offensive line coach at Tyrone. Before catching on at Juniata college. I didn't mention him because even on his Pa football great card that Tom and Rich came out with in assoc. with the PaFootballnews, he never acknowledged Tyrone. Evidentially he wasn't happy when he left because of being passed over for head job.... Haha I think it worked out pretty well for him even though we didn't want him. .... And ya wander why some folks have always had contempt for our school board... Wow

Re: Famous Alumni
Did you know?
Northern Bedford currently has the all time leading scorer in PIAA basketball history in AJ Nastasi.
At one point they had the leader in wins for a wrestler which was Jan Clark. This record has been destroyed with all the matches wrestled nowadays.
At one point Fred Glasgow was the leading rusher in Pennsylvania as a football player.
Ridiculous! As a complete side note I found a site with some hoops stats on it and AJ scored 1,000 points on 3 pointers alone.
