Is pitt a tourney team?
Re: Is pitt a tourney team?
I wouldn't sleep on this Pitt team. It's better for them to hit a little speed bump now than in 3 weeks. Maybe this is what Pitt needs. So many years they were so good all season and disappointed in the tournament. They hung tough with Syracuse and Duke. I see a lot of people having them going to the final 4 when filling out their brackets.

Syracuse won't make it to the elite 8... Duke beat pitt by 15 at Pitt thats not really close. Disappointing in those years is pitt losing in the sweet 16 and once in the elite 8.
If they make any of those rounds this year it will be viewed as a great success for them.

Re: Is pitt a tourney team?
Syracuse may not be a final 4 team but they did win the 1st few dozen games they played this year. So to act like they couldn't rattle off 4 in a row during the tourney would be nuts. I watched the Duke game, did you? That was a great back and forth game for 34 minutes. Duke put together a 8-0 run with 6 minutes to go that caused Pitt to press and out of their gameplan. If Pitt hits those 3 shots in a row instead of Duke, they easily could have been the team with a double digit win.

Jeff Sagarin's college basketball ratings as of March 9th: Pitt is 20th, with a schedule ranked 60th. There are 351 teams ranked.

Re: Is pitt a tourney team?
I think we may have gotten a little excited about this Pitt team too early, but again they truly do have a few bounces go their way, and we're talking about a 26-27 win team.
They are flawed.
Pitt does not have a Center.
They do not have a shooter.
They play 4 freshmen regularly.
In reality Pitt did what was expected of them (picked to finish 6th, finished 5th), but Pitt has proven they can compete with Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, and Cincinnati. Those 5 games were all settled by 5 points or less against ranked teams. They can compete, and I'm sure most coaches out there do not want to see Pitt in the first round of the tournament. Unlike past years, Patterson has the ability to take over a game. Sometimes Pitt didn't even have a player capable of doing that, but Lamar can.
They aren't really on the bubble, but they should probably win Thursday just to be sure.

Re: Is pitt a tourney team?
To be honest, a 1st round ACC loss for Pitt may not be an issue. IMO they will still make the tourney as an 10, 11, or 12 seed. I would rather be there than the dreaded 8 or 9 spot. When seeded there, even if you escape the 1st round, you will play a 1 seed in round 2. Why do you think there is usually an 11 or 12 seed in the sweet 16? It's because the path is much easier.

Re: Is pitt a tourney team?
Heck, if Pitt goes on a mini run, they may climb to a 6 seed.
In order to win the ACC, Pitt needs to get through these four games in order.
Notre Dame (Won in OT on road)
North Carolina (Lost by 4 on road)
Virginia (Lost at buzzer by 3 at home)
Duke/Cuse....Well....Tyler Ennis happened.
Not a likely run, but Pitt was right there in the regular season meetings of all those games, it would be nice to avenge some losses.
