Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
At any level of football, speed wins the game. I don't see that as anything new. Teams with superior speed and athletic ability win football games. Obviously, coaching plays a role, and of course you need a balance of strong line and defense to compliment that. On straight speed alone, Johnstown is way faster than teams like Mt. Union and Guilfoyle, but you need some balance to that obviously. Johnstown isn't 6-0 for a reason.
In my honest opinions.
Bishop Guilfoyle has the makeup of a team that can win games beyond District Six. D6 A plays D3 A in the first round. 09 McCort, 10 Carroll, 11 Penns Manor, 12 Bellwood all won that first game and advanced to the state's final four. In my honest assessment of Guilfoyle, I think they could beat a District 3 team. I would put their ceiling at making the Eastern Final, and that could possibly be winnable with some traditional single A powers moving to AA this year.
Mt. Union is good, but I would still rate Tyrone and Central as better teams, and teams more likely to win District Six. I would put their ceiling at making the D6 Title Game.
Ridge and Bedford can beat the District 9 rep, but than it goes to the WPIAL in the next round. I don't see either team being able to beat Aliquippa.
Somerset is good for around here, but they aren't in the same category of the likes Bishop McDevitt, Archbishop Wood, Erie Prep, Central Valley, West Allegheny ect...We always say teams like Ligonier and Mt. Union are disadvantaged because they play a lot of A teams, and well Somerset, Clearfield, and Johnstown have that same problem playing mostly AA teams. I would say their ceiling is roughly where Clearfield got last season. You can be fast and strong here, but it's a whole different ball game if you play McDevitt with Andre Robinson who is heading to PSU or Jordan Whitehead from Central valley heading to Pitt. The best teams in AAA could hang with the best teams of AAAA.

I do agree with your opinions of each team. In reality that's probably where they will get. I will be interested to see Somerset and guilfoyle out of the area to see how good they really are.

Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
Somerset is a very good football team but out of the district AAA starts to get extremely tough. Just don't see them being able to compete with type of talent scattered throughout the state bracket. Could surprise someone but not likely.
I think Bishop Guilfoyle is just as good as somerset. The only difference between the two is that Guilfoyle plays two classifications below in A. They could easily make the Eastern final and then anything can happen from there. McCort made it to Hershey in '09 and I think D6 has a chance to return.
Mount Union I think will have a very hard time winning D6 AA. They play lousy teams all year and will not be battle tested like some of the others in the AA field. I could see them possibly making the title game but also have to agree with Crimson on having Tyrone or Central taking the gold.
Bedford I think will beat ridge and have a very good game with the D9 rep, but ultimately if they squeak by in that one they do not have a legitimate shot of advancing any more in the state bracket. They have a good team but would get their socks blown off by a WPIAL team like South Fayette, the defending PIAA champion with the all-time D7 leading passer in Brett Brumbaugh taking snaps under center.
Will be very interesting to see how things play out

Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
Somerset is a good team, but there are a lot of great teams around the state in class AAA. Don't look for them to make a deep run.
BG is definitely a team that could make some noise. I don't see a threat coming out of D3 where I think Steelton Highspire will be the champ once again. The following week would be a real game taking on last years runner up Old Forge. They are fortunate that they stay in the east away from the Clairton/CW North Catholic winner. They are the latest hope for D6 to bring home a title.
For AA it will be very interesting to see the final pairings.

Of course he wasn't!!!! Most sports fans, athletes, and parents aren't realists. They are delusional!!!GoDragons wrote:I can do that math in my head. I was just trying to give the benefit of the doubt that you weren't trying to equate that to 28 points, which is ludicrous and delusional. I remember a die hard Rams fan making a statement years ago when the Steelers beat them by 4 touchdowns. He said, quote "a couple of different plays and the Rams would've won by two touchdowns. Of course he wasn't a realist....

Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
most of you have hit it right. Speed wins but you need the combination of speed AND power. I've seen many a fast team get smacked by power teams that run good ball control. That's how you have to beat a fast team, smack'em in the mouth...knock'em down and don't let them up...and control the tempo.

You think BG can compete with a WPIAL power and do you think they could beat a team like old forge?TAHS92Alum wrote:Somerset is a good team, but there are a lot of great teams around the state in class AAA. Don't look for them to make a deep run.

Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
Did you ever consider that the reason Somerset played a "bad" game was because the level of competition was higher in that game against a good Bedford team? This wasn't one of the cakewalks they've had all year. Those not used to winning have trouble giving credit where credit is due. If Somerset makes a few mistakes more than Bedford, then the end of this game might have turned out differently. By no means did the scoreboard show how close this game was until the 4th. I hate to tell you, you're only as strong as your weakest link and special teams will always be part of the game. Let's try and be humble world beaters..west33 wrote:I hate to tell you in the bedford game they had 3 big special teams plays, 1 for a td and the other two set up the offenses only score on a counter and the other big return set them up too! Also bedford jumped a screen pass and returned it to the 1 yd line. Other than that it was all somerset. That was somersets worst played game with turnovers and tons of penalties and they still won at bedford handily. Somerset moved the ball, bedford didn't. Somerset fumbled at the 1 yd line of bedford also. Terrible game and they still won away against one of the top teams in the lhc. That is what I saw of the game. Somerset had a td run of 30 yds also called back. Totally disagree with the above poster on that one. Bedford will have a tough time with forest hills in my opinion, especially if the qb is back. Somerset wrs dropped a lot of passes that game also.

Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
Hey hank, if you read above i did say bedford was the best team they played. I did give credit, but if they played 10 times somerset will win all ten! Clearly a better team than bedford! You should give some credit maybe to somerset. I would like to see berlin play the so called cake walk schedule somerset had in j-town, forest hills, bedford, richland, westmont, and bishop carrol. You might get 2 wins out of that cake walk. You better worry about your little west pac teams that can beat you like portage, shade, and meyersdale. Berlin was afraid to scrimmage somerset this year when asked, they said no! At least meyersdale and everett weren't afraid. You are the one knocking somerset. The poster above say if and butts a different game. Well somerset can say the same! That was a game they were flat and away and still won handily by 22! Maybe somerset being a good team caused bedford to mistake mistakes! Goes both ways buddy!!! The difference is and I am done discussing with with you select few is somerset won handily at bedford, game over!!! Move on to ridge! They r more bedfords competition.
Re: Speed, speed, and more speed.
Well the difference is Somerset is a AAA school playing a schedule of mostly AA teams. Yes, we were afraid of a scrimmage. Scrimmages are such a brutal thing for a team to go through. We wanted to scrimmage Somerset, but we were just too afraid. Anyhow back to converstation. Somerset is a very good team. I'm not knocking Somerset at all. I was just commenting on the game and how it was close until those last 14 points in the 4th. Let's not get our panties up in a bundle. Ten out of ten eh? So you're telling me there's a chance... YEAH! (Lloyd Christmas)west33 wrote:Hey hank, if you read above i did say bedford was the best team they played. I did give credit, but if they played 10 times somerset will win all ten!
