Yes but:

-Does PSU want to be perennial CBI participants?
-Is it fair to the tournament and the other teams in the tournament to come with the intentions of sitting out the only noteworthy player in PSU's program?
-Will Penn State gain anything from playing Rider, Mercer, and Radford that they haven't already gained playing a full B1G schedule?

There are plenty of teams that turned down the CBI, don't think the school is interested in investing money into something that isn't working. PSU better AT LEAST make the NIT next year or Chambers has to be done.

I can't see them making the NIT next year. I fully expect them to have a worse record with the loss of Newbill coupled with the fact that Thorpe and Garner haven't lived up to expectations to this point.

They have some nice freshmen coming in next year in Reaves, Zemgulis and Watkins, but I think they are one more season away from respectability.

Chambers and Dixon have both put themselves in horrific positions. Time to get new coaches for under performing programs

That's a good point, unless the kid from Oak Hill is as good as Newbill, Penn State could be worse.

Colorado was the only team from a power 5 to accept a CBI bid.

Unless the 3 freshman come in and contribute heavily right away I agree they could very well be worse next year.
You play to win the game!!!

Konjo I'm guessing you haven't been watching Penn State basketball for very long. This was one of the better seasons since I started watching them play. This is only the 6th time in the last 20 years that they finished with a winning record and atleast they were competitive just about every game, something that can't be said most years. The program is at least improving although it's taking longer than anyone wants and that's why they are working on a long term extension. Chambers is not going anywhere anytime soon. The new contract is expected to be announced soon.

Several years ago, when Pitt had less than a stellar season, they were not invited to the NCAA or NIT Tournament. They played in the CBI and won the championship over Washington State. The NEXT year they had a whale of a season. What good does it do Penn State to SIT down right now, instead of possibly playing another 5 games and at least winning 20 for the season. I think they are CHICKEN, fearing a poor showing in a low competitive tourney. Getting Newbill hurt is a poor excuse. And what would PSU gain from playing Rider, Mercer and Radford? Heck, that's the type of competition they played in their non-con schedule this year. So what's the difference.

They played in it last year and it was a disaster. No one wanted to be there, no one tried, and it was the worst they played all season. Why would they ever want to go back? It's not going to make them any better.

A new contract for Chambers is expected soon? Let's look at his record so far at PSU. In 4 years, his record is 54-74. He is 16-56 in conference play. His non-conference record is 38-18, thanks to a 12-1 record this year. Before that he was 26-17. Next year will be tough without Newbill. And the next year they lose Taylor, Dickerson, Jack and Foster. Tough two years ahead.
