Here we go again

Post by El-Moldo »

....Year after year we see the same thing. The Tribune published their high school "personal" stats in today's paper, thru week 2. The tackle stats are always amazing. This year Richland seems to be taking the cake. Based on a minimum of 20 tackles thru the first two games, Richland players hold two of the top 3 area positions (#1 and #3), with another player further down the list. The number one (area) Ram tackler has 43 total tackles already (10 solos). The third rated area tackler has 29 total, with 6 solos. Finally, the other Ram has 20 tackles, with 0 solos. YOY!! That makes THREE Richland players with 92 total tackles after only two games, with ONLY 16 solos. My question is, what were the OTHER 8 defensive players doing during the game. Throw in however many tackles these guys had so far, and how many tackles can a team make after 2 games??? Maybe everyone is shooting for that coveted all-state team at the end of the year. By the way, didn't Richland play any offense for the first two games? How liberal can a team be with their statistics?

It could be worse. If you played for either Meadville or DuBois, no one made ANY tackles for either side. =))
It ain't over until it's over.

When I played at film on Saturday morning the coach would give a solo to whoever made a tackle by himself (clearly) everything else was up to three tacklers. If the first guy made a hit and a second guy helped bring him down they both got an assist. If a third guy came in the three of them got an assist, the fourth guy was just a JOP (jump on pile), not hard to run stats up like that.

....Well here's how the top three tacklers faired in today's defensive stats:
....#1 Verhovsek Richland 10 solo 43 total
....#2 Parrish Ligonier 27 solo 34 total
....#3 Moran Richland 6 solo 29 total
....#13 Bloom Richland 0 solo 20 total
....Anyone notice a difference here? Seems like a little discrepancy, doesn't it? Looks like the Rams may be a little guilty of jumping on the pile. McCort also had 2 players listed. Both had a combined stat of 9 solo tackles and 41 total tackles. Seems like a lot of credit is given out for assists, doesn't it?

I actually handle McCort's tackles, I'm not and have no reason to fudge their stats. A big thing I notice with them is that they are a small team, it sometimes takes two kids to make a tackle. The computer program we use can only give a maximum of two players per tackle so even if I wanted to give every kid a tackle for landing on the pile, I can't.

I would guess you were at the Forest Hills/McCort game, that second half Forest Hills had 3 very long drives without many big plays, there were a lot of opportunities for tackles in that game for McCort.

I also was amazed at the tackles but I went to look at the actual games. I have input HS tackles so ... I wanted to look for myself.
Rich/ B G F game on 9-3-15. BG was 4 of 5 passing so possible 4 tackles. BG had 43 run plays for 310 yards so...4+43=47.
BG got 1 int so 1 rich tackle=48. Rich had 3 kickoffs = 51....Rich had 3 punts so 54 but BG had 5 TD's so no tackle = 49. BG had 2 fumbles so on one play there could be 2 solos or possible 4 assists. say 49+2= 51 APPROX PLAYS FOR A TACKLE.

The rule is a max of two asst per tackle...so with 51 plays there could have been 102 assts assuming no solos but many plays go out of bounds or a runner falls or a QB takes a knee so no tackle. Some plays have offensive holding and the scorekeeper credits a tackle even if there was no rush attempt.

Assume 51 plays could be max 102 assists no solo or say 30 solo (51-30=21 balance x 2 asst =42) and 42 assts= 30+42=72 total tackles.
Actual Tackles in this game was Richland 25 solo and 65 assts so 65/2= 33 + 25 solo= 58 plays not much different than the 51 plays computed above assuming no out of bounds or a punt with no return etc. In my opinion it may be 5 to 8 tackles too high.

Rich then played PC on 9-11-15
PC passing 13 attempt and 7 complete = 7
PC 48 carries so 7+48= 55
Rich 6 Kickoffs 55+6=61
Rich two punts 2+61= 63
NO PC fumbles so still at 63
Less 5 Richland TDS 63-5= 58
1 failed 2 pt conv = 58+1= 59

Less out of bounds, no return but add holding adjustments etc. so about 59 plays for a tackle.

Rich vs PC had 13 solo and 111 assists. If record a max of 2 assts then assts must always be an even #.
so use 112/2= 56 assist plays and 13 solo = 69 total plays or about 10 plays above 59 with no out of bounds....

How can this be???? Well I have been there and done that....I dont give #51 any assts tonight for a game but his dad will cal and say that on 3rd & 4 yds form the 26 yard line his son was the MLB and was on the bottom of the pile... so "you missed it"...so now you give an extra asst.

Some inside run plays it is impossible to give proper credit even after reviewing the film the next day. I might have seen that the tackle was #16 and #51 but the PA announcer says #16 & # 61 on the assist...so everyone thinks/hears it is #61 but I feel # 51 so...you end up giving 3 assts on the play...so DOES IT REALLY MATTER????probably not. I believe the Rich tackles seem reasonable in "total" and if little Johnny did not get an asst the scorekeeper will hear about it for the parents.

B MCT vs FH on 9-4-15 score BCT 14 FH 26

FH Complete pass = 4 plus 54 rushes= 58 plus 5 Kick off =63 plus 1 FH punt= 64 less 4 FH TD = 60 plus failed 2 pt Conv?=60

B MCT recorded 27 solo and 58 assts....so 58/2= 29 +27 solo= 56 plays which is less that above again due to out of Bounds and no put return etc.

These are just stats input to the best of each ability... budget 3 game hours and then 1 hr film watch and 45 min input is close to 4 hours for $30.00 pay.
I believe RICHLAND stats are correct.

So what i get is to make not only the Richland players look good but ALSO TO keep parents happy, giving out tackles like Halloween Candy is ok.
Thanks for clearing that up.

How do these gaudy Ram stats look after LOSING at Westy today? Way to go Hilltoppers! Talking with a PC sideline ****'t. last eve, he said the Panthers ran all over Richland, so FH should not have any trouble later when we play them. He said it, not me.
It ain't over until it's over.
