College Basketball 12/14-12/20

Games of the Week

Monday - It's finals week, there literally isn't a college hoops game on TV tonight.

Tuesday - VCU at Georgia Tech  9:00 ESPN2
Nothing too special here, but it is better than nothing. VCU is going through some growing pains without Shaka Smart on the bench. Georgia Tech has some skill, but they are a lower tier ACC team.

Wednesday - Mississippi State at Florida State 9:00 ESPN2
Florida State looks to be a tournament team this season. Mississippi State has former Pitt coach Ben Howland calling the shots now.  His team isn't very good this year, but he'll have MSU competing soon.

Thursday - Marshall vs. West Virginia 7:00 ESPNU
The battle of West Virginia.  Huggins has a good team this year.  Marshall doesn't appear to be very good, but it's a rivalry - anything could happen.

Friday - Ole Miss at Memphis  8:00 ESPN News
Two teams that may make the Big Dance come March, should be competitive.

Saturday - #9 Villanova at #8 Virginia   12:00 ESPN2
Two Top Ten teams going at it.  Nova has some great guards, UVA plays exceptional defense.  It will be a battle with two Sweet 16 caliber teams on the floor in December.   Utah/Duke, North Carolina/UCLA, Creighton/Oklahoma, Butler/Purdue, Northern Iowa/Iowa State, Baylor/Texas A&M, UNLV/Arizona  also highlight a very good basketball Saturday.

Sunday - Pitt vs. Davidson 12:00 ESPNU
Pitt takes on Davidson at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, big game for both sides.

Pitt 8-1    Davidson 12:00 Sunday

Pitt had an easy 33 point win over Eastern Washington and came out 2 days later and beat Morehead State by 10.  Pretty much expected week for the Panthers.  They have the week off basically, and will head to New York City on Sunday to play Davidson.   The Wildcats are a pretty good team that made the tournament last year.  They play a frantic offensive style, and will be a good test for Pitt.

Penn State 7-3

Pretty expected week for the Nittany Lions.  They lost to a good George Washington team to start the week on the road, and had two wins at Rec Hall to finish 2-1. Penn State has one game this week, against 1-6 Drexel at The Palestra.  Pat Chambers' squad should be 8-3 before they go to Vegas next week.

Duquesne 8-2

Duquesne handled UMBC and survived a tough game with St. Francis here in Johnstown to move to 8-2.  In fact, this is Duquesne's best start in years. They play South Carolina State (5-5) and Robert Morris (1-8) this week with a realistic chance to open the year 10-2.

Saint Francis 3-5

Saint Francis nearly pulled the upset on Duquesne at the War Memorial. The Flash have a New York roadtrip coming up with stops in Binghamton and Albany this week.  A split would be a success.

Any insight into why Ben Millaud-Meunier was on the bench for SFU for most of the 2nd half against the Dukes? Leading scorer in the 1st half, not in any foul trouble. Could have used him, for sure. Losing Drinnon hurt too.
It ain't over until it's over.

He can't really play defense. Duquesne's guards were too quick for him.
