Re: Gerrit Cole
But 5 million isn't even an option for him anyway, he's under contract so his issue was over what? A hundred grand?
(He's worth like 25 million a year on the open market anyway)

Re: Gerrit Cole
True as that may be, that's an entirely different conversation altogether.
In the current economics in baseball, that's how it is.

Re: Gerrit Cole
To me the issue is with the 'bonehead' in the front office that handled the situation. If I understand the situation, Cole was not asking for a huge salary increase or demanding to have his contract renegotiated, just questioning how his 2016 salary was calculated and some nimrod in the FO tells the team's best pitcher that if he doesn't like it we will cut your pay. I don't know about anyone else, but if that was me I would be PO'ed too. By the front office's own admission, they screwed up. No kidding captain obvious. Big Time.
The easiest thing to do in sports is hustle.

I don't have a problem with that, except more in line with the times, maybe say, 5 Mil. tops. Then back load the contracts with all sorts of PERFORMANCE- incentives as bonuses. You EARN what you DESERVE!
