Pirates deal Melancon to Nationals
Re: Pirates deal Melancon to Nationals
Starting to get the feeling know that they are waving the surrender flag for 2016.
The last couple of years I have not been critical of the Pirates ownership and the investments they made in salaries to make the Buccos competitive, but after reading some of the deals the FO just made today, it appears the word cheap is going to return when describing the Pirates ownership.
Amazing that they were willing to give up two top 10 prospects just to dump Liriano's salary.
Maybe all the money they saved from these deals will be used to sign a top notch FA starting pitcher in the off season. HA HA HA HA

And it's not just Liriano....they "threw in" Reese McGuire(Unreal) and Harold Ramirez in the deal as well. I have no idea WTF is going on right now with these late deals. Huntington seems to have broken the legs on his rocker.dadw/2sons wrote:i just saw what they gave away with Liriano. my question is why? how many years did he have left on his contract? is this hutchinson guy ready to pitch in the majors now? i'm confused right now.

Trading Liriano in general was a good move, he's been awful this year. The overall back and forth of the trade was bizarre however.

trading away Liriano wasn't the problem giving away 2 kids with the deal is what i don't get what was the back & forth? do you have any insight? had to do with Frankie's contract. any details?
Re: Pirates deal Melancon to Nationals
I'm ok with the trade if Frankie's 15 mill is put into a pitcher to put the team over the hump. The foundation is there. The Pirates got younger today and subtracted salary. They aren't a contender this year and got major league ready pitchers in return.
If you want to dump 15 million dollars you have to give something up to get that to happen. The Pirates brass felt like it was ok to give these guys up to do that. To me, they are building like the Pens. The former young guys are now veterans (Cutch, Marte, Polanco, Harrison, Cole, Watson, and Mercer).
The young guys weren't ready to take the team to higher levels this year but next year you have Taillon, Glasnow, and Bell ready to go on day one.
Add a top 25 starter in the offseason (what Frankie was supposed to be) and then work with Kuhl, Brault, Hutchison, etc to fill the 5th spot and to fill in.
I see the trades this way in my world with rose colored glasses. It was time to get rid of some of the older guys to get younger and to free up money. They have spent money wisely for the most part and I'm excited to see what 2017 brings to the table. I just don't want to see guys starting games now when they should be using these younger guys to get some necessary MLB experience.

Yes, I will wait to see what they do with the "financial flexibility" this offseason before taking one side or the other on this trade.

Re: Pirates deal Melancon to Nationals
Man it always seems like the pirates get younger this time of the year. I'll give a clue here. The cubs are both young and ready so trying to get younger is putting the pirates a good 3-4 years behind where they should be.
I wouldnt be surprised in the next 2 years those core guys coach talked about will be in other unis. They built a good core but never pulled the financial trigger to solidify the roster as top level! Until they do that we will keep seeing this trend of always going younger.

The Pirates are a year behind the Cubs, they need to do now what the Cubs did last year. Put all the young guns in! Ride the Cole Train, Glasnow, Taillon, Kuhl, and Brault. Sit Jaso, sit Cutch, sit Kang, Play Joyce, Play Fraizer, and for goodness sakes play Bell. Your bullpen is solid, you have long relief in Locke and Vogelsong if needed. They better go 9-0 or 8-1 in the next 9 or I'm gonna go on strikekonjo78 wrote:Man it always seems like the pirates get younger this time of the year. I'll give a clue here. Re: Pirates deal Melancon to Nationals
The past three years before this one, they usually went older or just stood or on the team they had.
Morneau/Byrd in 2013, Aramis Ramirez and Joakim Soria last year.
The three main guys they got rid of were Liriano, Niese, and Melancon.
Niese and Liriano leaving were for the best, since they both owned 2 of the worst ERA's among starting pitchers and both had large contracts.
Melancon leaving was a business decision, and they added two hars throwers with value in his place.
The 2 guys added to the current roster yesterday were 29 year old Ivan Nova and 30 year old Antonio Bastardo.
