Jose Quintana
Re: Jose Quintana
Nutting is more concerned about the ski season in western Somerset County.
It ain't over until it's over.
Re: Jose Quintana
Something has changed in the last two weeks or so.
If they add Quintana and don't get rid of McCutchen and Watson in the process we can probably start looking forward to a long Buctober.

Agreed, if this happens, it will be the first large scale positive movement by the Pirates bringing hope back to what seemed like a dwindling flame.knowitall wrote:Something has changed in the last two weeks or so.

Re: Jose Quintana
Well assuming if McCutchen returns to his old self, there might be a postseason run.
Re: Jose Quintana
"Pirates have re-signed starting pitcher Ivan Nova to a three year 26 million dollar deal."
Wow! Granted the numbers being thrown around previously were just his asking price, but that is significantly lower than the 5/70 numbers that were mentioned previously. At a little under 9 mill per year and based on some of the other deals already signed by starting pitchers, this seems like a good risk worth taking.
In regards to Cutch, it is just my opinion, but I don't think we will see him in a Pirates uniform in 2017. There have been so many teams mentioned as trade partners in a deal involving McCutchen that it just seems the Pirates are really just waiting for the deal they like the best. I hope I am wrong because I think 2016 was a fluke year. He is just too good to drop off that fast.
Also how high is Nutting going to let the payroll go? Per Cot's Baseball Salary web site the Pirates year end payroll was just under $ 110 mill. I have to think they are getting real close to the max Nutting is willing to pay. They cleared around $12 mill off that number since the end of the season. Nova just signed for 8+, and the arbitration increases still have not been determined. So there is not much room available to do too much else.
Quintana would a nice addition, but I just don't see the payroll supporting both him and McCutchen.

The easiest thing to do in sports is hustle.

Re: Jose Quintana
Quintana makes less than Liriano, so the payroll can support both as it has the past 4 seasons.

Re: Jose Quintana
In signing Nova and Hudson the Bucs have equaled Liriano's pay, so they did use up that financial flexibility
Re: Jose Quintana
True, but they should still have some because they don't have Melancon, Feliz, Sean Rodriguez or Matt Joyce.
