Side note. The Royal Imperial Collegiate school of St. Catherine's, Ontario Canada, played Dubois and The Kiski School this year. They are 30 minutes north of Niagara Falls.

Canadian football must be pretty competitive.  Penn State has 3 defensive contributors right now from north of the border.  Jesse Luketa who has seen snaps at MLB in several games as a true freshman.  Sophomore safety Jonathan Sutherland who is in the rotation at safety and plays on nearly all of the special teams units.  RS Sophomore Daniel Joseph is in the rotation for the interior defensive line.  These 3 go along with Michael O'Connor who was on the team for 2 years and made the 3 deep depth chart at QB for a while before returning to British Columbia University to finish his football career.

Not to be a huge know-it-all, but Jesse Luketa went to Erie First Christian Academy, but they don't offer football so he played football for Mercyhurst Prep.

I was at a Bishop Carroll/Erie First game a few years ago, and it looked like Erie First had a grown man on its team, I soon found out he was a division one linebacker recruit. He was like 6-3 220 as a sophomore lol.

The few Canadian schools that are constantly playing Ohio, Michigan, New York or Pennsylvania competition aren't real 'high schools' in the traditional sense. They're more IMG than BGHS.

Those schools generally play NO home games, and exist simply to act as Football Factories for Canadian kids trying to get into colleges in America for football. The first one was Canada Prep, but now there's two Football North's (that also go by different names since they're associated with other schools up there like Clarkson), and West Toronto Prep is the fourth one.

Sometimes they do play each other.

As for traditional high school football in Canada.... it's complicated. The Maritime Provinces don't have organized tackle football at all. Obviously, it's not that popular. But what they do have, is flag football. Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta play organized high school football and use Canadian rules. Very briefly, when Ontario first started playing 'title games', was five games at Rogers Centre the same weekend that the Buffalo Bills were hosting their one-game-a-year in Toronto. With that, they played on a U.S.-sized field, but used the CFL ball and rules.

Ontario's OFSAA operates quite similarly to the PIAA. Rather than 'districts' that have 'Athletic Associations' that operate regionally. There's a lot of them covering the entire province. The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations, after a few years of the Bills setup, began staging a tournament that allowed all regional champions to play a 'bowl game' to a provincial title.

There's 17 regions. Private schools around Toronto are in their own association and are one of the 17. ONE region gets two teams. For a total of 18 teams and 9 bowl games. The first year, they played them in Etobicoke's Centennial Stadium. Etobicoke being a region of Greater Toronto. I attended those games. Then, they moved them to Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. Apparently this year they're playing them in Ottawa at TD Place.

Games are Monday through Wednesday, and due to weather, play 3 games Monday starting at 10am and done by around 7pm. Tuesday has four games starting at 10. And Wednesday has just two games. In the past they were the week of the U.S.'s Thanksgiving. This year, they're the week after.

What's interesting that in those associations around the province, they only name one champion. Or at least only one is 'champion' and the rest are winners of lesser tournaments. They also do a tournament for junior varsity, etc. Or 'reserve' teams.

Now, having pointed out all that. Then there's British Columbia. BC plays with American rules. They also, for their association, have AAA and AA for playoffs. They also have JV and 8th Grade. Only AAA and AA have playoffs. This week, on Saturday, they have SIX games at BC Place where the Vancouver Whitecaps and B.C. Lions play. It's interesting seeing them play on such a large field but only have it lined for 100x53.3 and ten yard endzones. There's tons of sideline room and in the endzones.

Their title games are also called the Subway Bowl as they're sponsored by the sandwich shop.

Canada then has "U Sports", which is for Canadian colleges, and the CJFL which is for Junior Football. Essentially kids done playing high school football. They retain their amateur status. The CJFL has 18 teams in three conference (BC, Prairie and Ontario, six teams in each). Very much in line with how Junior Hockey leagues work.

What's interesting is that for years, there was one Canadian college that played American rules. That was Simon Fraser in B.C. Partly because how BC high schools play American rules, they joined the NAIA on their founding in 1965. Crosstown UBC played in the then CIAU/CIS/U Sports (keeps changing names). In 2002, Simon Fraser joined CIS and played Canadian rules. But then joined NCAA Division II and play American rules again.

And for those curious, CIAU/CIS/U Sports championship game is the Vanier Cup. The semifinals are the Uteck Bowl and Mitchell Bowl. The Uteck Bowl was always the name of the semifinal that included the Atlantic Province schools. Then, they started alternating who played in what 'bowl', even though the game wasn't really much other than a moniker for either. But now it seems like they've stuck back to the Uteck Bowl always being the eastern title played in the far east. it used to be consistently played in Halifax. But it's since moved around.
