Last year (2003) the girls 3200 relay team from Everett went to states and placed 7th. If I am correct, they were ranked 14th out of 15 teams and ended up placing 7th in the state. The year before (2002) they had a chance at medaling but the batton was knocked out of their hands right before the first exchange, which knocked them almost in last position. They probably would have placed that year too if it weren't for that incident, but they came back last year determined to medal. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough. Most of the D5 district records in the 800 on up, including the 4x800, would not even have been fast enough to place at states last year (or most any year for that matter). When a district record isn't even fast enough to place at states, I would call that a soft record.

D5 has had some good performances at states by distance runners. Jason Cole was a state champion, but only ran 4:30 at districts. Everett girls showed how much you can improve when you get good competition. My point is that the district records in the distances are not that good. And as I pointed out earlier, one reason is the lack of competition within the district. It's hard to run a fast time when nobody is close to you in a distance event.
I don't mean to discredit anyone here, but breaking one of Kim Spriggs records would be far more impressive. Megan Lamens threw the javelin 128'. That was probably the most impressive mark in the girls meet, yet she is not credited with a record. If she throws that at states, she will almost certainly medal. The times the girls ran in the 800, 1600 and 3200 will not be fast enough to earn a medal at states. I'm not saying these girls can't win medals at state, they both have a legitimate shot and I'm hoping they do so.
Records are great to hold, but sometimes we get so hung up on them, we miss better performances that happen to be in events where the record was set by a great athlete.
