I was looking at last years team vs this years. westy I believe won 3 games this year with no talent and ch the same. Bedford, somerset, and bg had plenty of talent back and should be winning. Hell you could coach those teams to wins and you probably never played football.

You are correct the other teams all had talent back. Do you not give the coaches some credit for developing talent? Or in the BG case recruiting it? LOL

Richland used to be a pretty awful program too. Landis has benefitted from talent just the same as any coach, yeah he turned them around but they were pretty loaded last season. Both coaches have advanced to the state semifinals in the past 3 years, they are about equal in my eyes. Richland actually hung with Aliquippa in the 2012 game for a while too.

If this were 1950, players still wore leather helmets, and the forward pass just got implemented then Coach of the Year goes to Westmont! Their program does 0 for player development and absolutely nothing for the next level! Landis and Wheeler both turned around BAD programs! Somerset has had talent and size over the years but poor coaching and athletic development kept them at the bottom! Wheeler hasn't lost in a year and a half, that speaks well too! My vote hands down goes to West33 for all his blurted out slurred words of wisdom you can count on hearing at EVERY Somerset game!

I don't see how you have a coach of the year. There are good coaches and bad coaches in high school football, however the ever revolving talent dictates a lot of the results in high school football.

Question on the original post: is the middle component of the metric based strictly on data (i.e. wins and losses)? Does this mean you simply took the current coaches career record and compared it to a win/loss record of previous teams back to '04? I wasn't sure if this was meant to be that or if you simply were making a judgment call based on current vs. previous coach (or coaches)?

For instance, I know some people on here don't like Penna at JHS, but I'd take him every day of the week and twice on Sundays over Marabito. But if you're talking about strictly numbers back to '04, I get what you're saying.

Same with Basile at McCort... are you throwing away last year's Davitch team or rolling that W-L record into a total and running those numbers back to '04? I'm guessing the latter because I can't think anyone would say 2014 Davitch > Basile. (I know the records don't show it but I think the team is playing way better and are a year away from some improvements.

Correct. You can't at this point say whether Brian is having a good or bad year (relative to himself). But he (17% winning pct.) can be compared against the last 10 years of McCort coaches (70% winning pct), to say that his personal difference is -53%. Whereas Bob Landis has taken Somerset from a 23% winning pct to a 67% winning pct during his tenure, and up to 83% this year.

Crimson made a good point, that you could use preseason rankings to calculate over/under-performance. I agree. The method I've chosen for evaluating coaches gives a lot of weight to coaches who inherited bad programs and little weight to coaches that inherited winning programs.

UPDATE:

The rankings still have Bob Landis from Somerset as coach of the year with Justin Wheeler close behind. Their final game of the season should decide the true coach of the year, barring any unforseen upsets.
