District Five A

1. Berlin. 7-0. Next Game: @ Meyersdale – Berlin has certainly asserted themselves as the top team in District 5 to this point. The Mountaineers employ a powerful offense led by a dynamic sophomore running back, Braden Fochtman. Fochtman already has 1,252 yards and 16 touchdowns on the year. The Mountaineers may see their toughest test yet, as they travel to Meyersdale. The Red Raiders are a solid team, and would love to make a statement, so Berlin certainly needs to be on the lookout.



2. Meyersdale. 6-1. Next Game: Berlin – Meyersdale scored a fourth quarter touchdown against North Star, and it proved to the difference, as they hung on for a 6-0 win. The Red Raiders obviously put in a great defensive performance last week. The offense has been pretty electric for the most part this year, and it will definitely need to be that on Friday with Berlin coming to town. Meyersdale has a chance to take hold of the top spot, and there will be quite an atmosphere on hand Friday night.



3. Northern Bedford. 6-1. Next Game: @ Bellwood-Antis – Northern Bedford bounced back into the win column last week with a 40-14 decision over West Branch. The task this week will be much more difficult. The Panthers will head to Bellwood to take on the top District Six A team. Bellwood has seemingly always had Northern Bedford’s number, even last year when both teams entered undefeated, and Bellwood ran away with it 20-0. The Panthers will have revenge on the mind, but Bellwood is not an easy place to win.



4. Tussey Mountain. 6-1. Next Game: Claysburg-Kimmel – Tussey has been red hot since their week two loss to Northern Bedford. The offense has posted at least 42 points in each of the past five weeks. The Titans went into a big showdown with Juniata Valley and absolutely ran away with it 42-13. They should be able to beat Claysburg this week before two big showdowns to close out the year with Mt. Union and Meyersdale.



5. Windber. 4-3. Next Game: Ferndale – The Ramblers did not rise to the occasion last week in Portage, but they are still a very talented team. The problem is the defense, as they are giving up way too many points in their losses. Meyersdale, Ligonier, and Portage were able to score plenty of points and outlast their strong offense. Windber should be able to win the next two with Ferndale and Conemaugh Valley on the horizon.



District Five AA



1. Bedford. 5-2. Next Game: Central Cambria – Bedford really proved a lot last week, even though they lost. Bedford went into Somerset and battled them to the end. This is a very good football team, and they have a tough test with Central Cambria on Friday.



2. Chestnut Ridge. 5-2. Next Game: @ Allegany (MD) – Ridge is quietly putting together a solid season. The Lions have gone out and beat the teams they were supposed to, and its gotten them to a 5-2 record. They will go up against 3-3 Allegany of Cumberland, Maryland this weekend on the road. Ridge dropped this game 42-8 last season.



3. Everett. 3-4. Next Game: @ Southern Huntingdon – The Warriors have yet to come up with a big win this season. They have dropped two in a row to very god teams in Bellwood and Mt. Union. Everett has a good chance to regroup this weekend with a game at Southern Huntingdon.

Just curious on the comment about Bedford. The combined record of the teams they beat is 10-25. Even though the score was close, Somerset outgained Bedford 462-199. I have not seen them play.

So to lose by one score isn't battling?

1 pick 6 for Bedford.

Bedford outgained Somerset pretty significantly in return yardage and got some turnovers that you don't see in yardage numbers.

I believe Somerset to be the better team, but Bedford was in the game and could have won it. Somerset also had Stull back this week who is a top 2 or 3 player in the conference. Bedford for having 6 soph. starters is having a nice season. They have lost to clearly the best 2 teams in the LHAC.

Honestly, this year, I would take D5 A over D6 A. It's rare that you can honestly say that.

D5 A over D6 A? The number 5 ranked D6 team (Portage) handily beat both the number 2 and 5 teams of D5 A, although they did lose to Berlin. I believe atleast 3 of the teams ranked ahead of them could beat Berlin if they played.

Not based on what they have done yet, but if I were to throw those 10 teams into a league, this is how I think it would truly shake out.

1. Bellwood-Antis
2. Bishop Guilfoyle
3. Homer Center
4. Berlin
5. Penns Manor.
6. Portage
7. Northern Bedford
8. Meyersdale
9. Tussey Mountain
10. Windber

I have only seen 5 of those 10 play, and I will see Homer this weekend. But for my perception, that is how I would see it.
