Pedro Alvarez is really bad right now

His walks are up from last year to this year and his strikeouts are down but man oh man does this guy still look bad at the plate so often. If he could ever hit .260+ he would be an absolute monster for this team. When he is hitting the ball it looks so good. I wish it happened a little more frequently.

He's bringin' the leather like Brooks Robinson! I'll accept that as much as a 30 HR- 100 RBI guy, even if he has a sorry avg. right now. It will come eventually.

I think he has improved each year. He is a power guy and will always swing and miss a bunch. But his numbers are getting better. I think he has become an above average fielder with a really strong arm. (although having some throwing issues recently.) Plus he is really doing well on the bases. I would want to lock this guy up, but we better enjoy him because nutting isn't gonna pay him. He will be traded next year is my guess.

Pedro has been playing very well lately. He is a historically slow starter in the month of April, but he has been dang good in May. He took his average from the .190 range at the end of April up to the .220 range now, and I suspect he hits anywhere from .230 - .240 this year, and for him, that's pretty good.

He's had 3 multi hit games in his last 10.

His WAR is a 0.2, that is pathetic! Is he really worth a big money contract?

I totally agree that sometimes numbers are deceiving. But with all the numbers he has he cost the BUCS at least three losses with errors. So the WAR number is pretty close.

WAR and other sabermeterics can be useful, but its not the end all stats some make them out to be. RBI's and Homer's are still valuable assets in measuring a player's worth IMO. I'm not a baseball guru by a long stretch, but I know Alvarez's bat will still be a hot a commodity for year's to come despite his WAR. Power hitters don't grow on tree's, and the Pirates have a home grown one in the lineup for now, and the team is better for it.
