Preseason District 6 Class A Power Rankings

Post by Crimson's Ghost »

1. Bishop Guilfoyle 0-0 @ Bedford
Easy choice here for the top spot, as the two-time defending state champions are set for another big year. Sure the loss of Evan Chadbourn to an ACL injury was one of the biggest story lines of the offseason, but there should be enough in place for BG to have another run at a third straight state title. The Marauders have a massive offensive line headed by 6'2" 190 senior Logan McGeary.  They return quarterback, Josh Trybus. Also key contributors back include 6'5" tight end Luke Frederick and RB/LB Harvard commit Andrew Irwin. They open the season on the road at Bedford. It was a game we all wanted to see last season, but it did not work out scheduling wise.  Bedford loses a good bit, but could provide a tough opening contest in week one.

2. Homer Center 0-0 @ Purchase Line
Homer Center's season will begin on the road at Purchase Line. The Wildcats are coming off a modest 5-5 campaign, but they gain a year of experience and should take a leap forward this season.  If you recall, this program was the last one to hand Bishop Guilfoyle a loss.  Greg Page always has consistent and well-coached teams, and this one should be no different. Jesse Lee and Monato Coleman should provide one of the better 1-2 punches out of the backfield in the Heritage Conference.  Jesse Beacker returns after a 1,000 yard passing season as a junior.

3. Portage 0-0 Ferndale
Portage loses a lot from last season's 9-3 team. The Mustangs have been in that position before. It just seems Gary Gouses's program always has that next man up mentality, and the new group of seniors will emerge as key players. While there are some unproven players across the board, they do have an entrenched commodity in senior tailback, Braedon St. Clair.  The senior back is coming off a 1,000 yard rushing season and averaged 11.2 yards per carry.  The Portage offense is always built on a strong rushing attack, and with a player like St. Clair, they should be in good hands.

4. Moshannon Valley 0-0 @ Northern Bedford
You don't go 12-1 on the back of one player, although it seemed at times Eric Sherkel did everything for the Knights.  He has since graduated, and part-time QB Curtis Neff will take over the reins full-time. Jake Murawski at tailback and Devin Thomas at fullback (also their top linebacker) return with plenty of experience. Murawski was also the team's leading receiver last season, and perhaps his role can expand more this season. We should know a lot about this team right off the bat, with a trip to one of the best District 5 has to offer in Northern Bedford.

5. Northern Cambria 0-0  Penns Manor
The Colts are coming off a solid 6-5 campaign, and will look to build on that in 2016. A big opener with Heritage Conference rival, Penns Manor, will say a lot about both teams. Look for their workhorse running back, Chris Rippin, to have an even stronger season this year.  There are some holes on this team that need filled, but coach Frank Paronish and his staff always does a nice job.
